GRAND BLANC TWP. - Metalheads who dig barbershop music?
Believe it or not, they're out there. And that's good news for the Flint Arrowhead Barbershop Chorus. The group is trying to recruit younger members to replace aging choristers who are retiring and moving to Florida.
Mott Community College student Dennis Berger listens to the Japanese metal band Loudness. But he also likes "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" in four-part harmony.
"I like barbershop because it reflects the past," said Berger, a 19-year-old guitarist. "It's great."
Berger said he and high school buddies used to talk about putting together a barbershop quartet, "but we sucked (as singers). We would have just embarrassed ourselves."
You don't have to be a virtuoso to sing with the chorus, said longtime musical director John Noteware, 58, of Davison Township at a recent practice session at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 9020 S. Saginaw Road.
You just have to be able to carry a tune. And not even all that far.
"You can take four average voices and blend them and make a sound that's very pleasant," said member Paul Smith, 63, of Brandon Township.
Ages in the 25-man club range from 14 to 93, but the seniors vastly outnumber the juniors.
"Our membership is getting older," said Michael McClean, 48, who joined the chorus two years ago.
